There are lots of pretty good instructional books and videos; even a few good websites. But I favour learning the way John Lennon and Paul McCartney taught themselves... learn a new chord; write a song featuring it.

I learnt that years ago, when I was trying to learn to play, and it worked pretty well. It also allows you to develop your own style, rather than worrying about sounding like someone else.

Well.. there's truly no best way to start learning how to play. Some people will learn faster one way and some another. I'll just tell you how I started learning to play.

I had purchased a book/DVD combo called Guitar for the Absolute Beginner by Susan Mazer. It was very informative, and covered the basics of tuning, the parts of the guitar, and even how to read tablature. It then had some very useful beginners guitar steps, starting with the basics and working into a little more intermediate playing by the end. The DVD that accompanied it was very helpful in that Susan showed you exactly how to play or do what was in the book. After I learned everything I could in the book I honestly just started looking up music online and learning how to play it. I started with some relatively easy things such as a few Beatles songs which weren't too difficult. And from there it's basically a self-learning process unless you want to take lessons. I did not take any and simply kept playing new things and trying things out to improve my skill.

Now.. tabs. Tabs are basically an easy way of showing how to play a song without all of the notes. Guitar tabs have 6 lines running across, and each line represents one string on the guitar. They are in order like if the guitar was sitting on your lap how you would play it. The bottom-most line on the tab is the string closest to you, or the top string if you were holding the guitar normally. The second highest line is the next string, and so on. Now the numbers on the lines correspond to the fret that you are supposed to play. So for example, if the tab has on the bottom most line: 6--4--7--2, that would mean that on the E string(the string which would be closest to you if the guitar were laying down[they go in the order of EADGBE]), you would play the 6th fret, then the 4th fret, etc. That is just your basic tab. There may be extra notation to show that you are supposed to play a certain way. If this doesn't make sense just look up a tab and look at it while you read this, hopefully it'll make a little more sense. Hope this helps.
