Is it because it irritates the cervix? What exactly is it about sex that is supposed to make labor start if you are close to your due date?

Semen can ripen the cervix. It's the prostaglandins that does it. (At the hospital, if they give you cervidil, that has pig semen in it! Sorry.....much rather have hubby's!)

Orgasm, contractions and milk ejection are all caused by the release of the same hormone, oxytocin.

Orgasm involves uterine contractions, which can turn into real labor sometimes.

Sex does induce labor sometimes because they tell women who tend to go into premature labor to abstain from it at a certain point. It is not an old wives tail! Semen has an effect on your cervix because of prostaglandins in it. Orgasm also releases hormones that assist in uterine activity. For some reason, it doesn't always make you go into labor, but it can, so if you are already having premature contractions, then take it easy. Sorry husbands for the bad news! :)

Semen contains some prostaglandin and having an orgasm may stimulate a few contractions, but having sex won't induce labor.

For a long time women have been told that sex at the end of pregnancy would help bring on the contractions that signal labor. It's been used to try and induce labor for as long as women have been pregnant. Until recently everyone believed it.

A study of over 90 women at the end of their pregnancies were asked about their sex lives. More than 50 of the women were still having sexual intercourse at the end of their pregnancies (after the 37th week). According to this study, not only was sex not likely to induce labor but it actually seemed to delay labor for a couple of days. The group that was still having sex had an average gestational age of 39.9 weeks, while the group who was not having sex gave birth on average at 39.3 weeks.

I had a very complicated, high risk pregnancy and was fortunate enough to have 2 of the top 10 OBGYN’s looking after me. Both of them said that sex does not induce labor, but it can lead to contractions. Rarely these contractions lead to labor. You have a greater chance of getting into labor by drinking icy cold water during the last weeks.

There is something in male ejaculation that irritates the cervix into opening up. I don't know why it works but it does.

There's something in semen that makes the cervix start to soften and dialate. Also the orgasm makes your uterus contract.
