I'd recommend reading by chapters. By my count there are 45 chapters, so you need to average just slightly more than one chapter a day from now till school starts. Read when you've got time, and preferably when you have the leisure to enjoy it. It's a good book. I'd think about the characters, and make an effort to keep them straight. (Make notes if it helps.) I'd also think about the social and economic context, as described by Dickens. He's also noted for his perceptions of human nature, and many examples appear in this book. For example: "In seasons of pestilence some of us will have a secret attraction to the disease—a terrible passing inclination to die of it. And all of us have like wonders hidden in our breasts, only needing the circumstances to evoke them." Also keep an eye out for descriptions that imply more than they say. For example, this description of Dover: "A little fishing was done in the port, and a quantity of strolling about by night, and looking seaward; particularly at those times when the tide made, and was near flood. Small tradesmen, who did no business whatever, sometimes unaccountably realized large fortunes, and it was remarkable that nobody in the neighborhood could endure a lamp-lighter." -- Book the First, Chapter IV Dickens never comes right out and SAYS the main local businesses are illicit (probably smuggling and salvage), but that's the implication. Syntax is just the matter of arrangement, on two levels: sentence structure and ordering of the whole story presentation. I'm not sure to which level your assigned questions relate, but the questions themselves should make that clear.

The Signet Classics version is 400 pages long.

Other versions probably don't vary too much, as the primary text will not be changed, just the introduction.
