How to write an epic poem in free verse?

Can anyone tell me how to write an epic poem in free verse, (of course, it's going to be a fictional one). I'm sure someone can help me.

Read through MacKinley Kantor's Glory for Me, which was the basis for William Wyler's film, The Best Years of Our Lives; or Stephen Vincent Benet's John Brown's Body, if you're looking for a more broadly based epic. You cannot begin better than by seeing what others have done.
