Paradoxical sleep is what is commonly referred to as REM sleep...a recurring sleep state during which dreaming occurs; a state of Rapid Eye Movements during sleep. It's called paradoxical because instead of becoming more inactive, the brain seems to come alive with dreams, such a high state of activity that even the eyes dart back and forth under the closed eyelids.
