There are several different versions of poker, but the most popular one played today is Texas Hold 'em. That one is played in the following manner.

The Shuffle, The Deal and The Blinds

The dealer shuffles a standard 52-card deck.

(In casinos, the dealer never plays. A round disc -- known as a "dealer button" -- moves clockwise from player to player with each hand. The button marks which player would be the dealer if the deal were advanced from player to player as the game went along.)

Most Texas Hold 'Em Poker games start with the two players to the left of the dealer (the button) putting a predetermined amount of money into the pot before any cards are dealt, ensuring that there's something to play for on every hand. This is called "posting the blinds." Most often, the "first blind" -- the player to the left of the dealer -- puts up half the minimum bet, and the "second blind" puts up the full minimum bet.

Each player is dealt two cards, face down. These are known as the "hole cards."

Betting Begins

A round of betting takes place, beginning with the player to the left of the two who posted the blinds. Players can call, raise, or fold when it's their turn to bet.

The Flop

After the first betting round, the dealer discards the top card of the deck. This is called burning the card and is done to ensure that no one accidentally saw the top card, and to help prevent cheating.

The dealer then flips the next three cards face up on the table. These cards are called the "flop."

NOTE: Eventually, a total of five community cards will be placed face up on the table. Players can use any combination of the community cards and their own two hole cards to form the best possible five-card Poker hand.

After the flop, another round of betting takes place, beginning with the player to the left of the dealer (the button). During this and all future rounds of betting, players can check, call, raise, or fold when it's their turn to bet.

Fourth Street

The dealer burns another card and plays one more face up onto the table. This, the fourth community card, is called the "turn" or "Fourth Street."

The player to the left of the dealer (the button) begins the third round of betting.

Fifth Street

The dealer burns another card before placing the final face-up card on the table. This card is called the "river" or "Fifth Street."

Final Betting and The Winner

Players can now use any combination of seven cards -- the five community cards and the two hole cards known only to them -- to form the best possible five-card Poker hand.

The fourth and final round of betting starts with the player to the left of the dealer (the button).

After the final betting round, all players who remain in the game reveal their hands. The player who made the initial bet or the player who made the last raise shows their hand first.

The player with the best hand wins.

Well what hand beats what you might be asking?

Hands are ranked in descending order. Look to see who has the highest hand from the following list.
Royal Flush. Ace, King ,Queen, Jack, Ten of the same suit.
Straight Flush. Five cards of the same suit in sequence.
Four Of A kind . Four cards of equal rank. (Example. 5d 5c 5s 5h).
Full House. Three cards of equal rank and two different cards of equal rank. (Example: Three Aces and two sixes).
Flush. Any five cards of the same suit.
Straight. Five cards in sequence regardless of the suit. Example: 6d 7h 8c 9h 10s.
Three Of A Kind. Three cards of equal rank. (Example. Three Queens or Three fives).
Two Pair. Two cards of equal rank and two different cards of equal rank. (Example: Two threes and two nines).
Pair. Two cars of equal rank. (Example: Two eights).
High Card. A hand containing no pair is determine by the highest ranking card in the hand. The Ace is high deuce is low.

Tips:

A sixth card is never used to break a tie.
c = clubs, d = diamonds, h = hearts, s = spades
Folding means to throw in you hand and give up playing that round.
Make sure you know what you have in your hand before folding.

Poker has many variations, each following the same pattern of play.

The right to deal each hand typically rotates among the players and is marked by a token called a 'dealer' button or buck. In a casino, a house dealer handles the cards for each hand, but a button (typically a white plastic disk) is rotated clockwise among the players to indicate a nominal dealer to determine the order of betting.

One or more players are required to make forced bets to create an initial stake for which the players will contest. The dealer shuffles the cards, he cuts, and the appropriate number of cards are dealt to the players one at a time. Cards may be dealt either face-up or face-down, depending on the variant of poker being played. After the initial deal, the first of what may be several betting rounds begins. Between rounds, the players' hands develop in some way, often by being dealt additional cards or replacing cards previously dealt. At the end of each round, all bets are gathered into the central pot.

At any time during a betting round, if a player makes a bet, opponents are required to fold, call or raise. If one player bets and no opponents choose to match the bet, the hand ends immediately, the bettor is awarded the pot, no cards are required to be shown, and the next hand begins. This possibility of winning a pot without showing a hand makes bluffing possible. Bluffing is a primary feature of poker, one that distinguishes it from other vying games and from other games that make use of poker hand rankings.

At the end of the last betting round, if more than one player remains, there is a showdown, in which the players reveal their previously hidden cards and evaluate their hands. The player with the best hand according to the poker variant being played wins the pot.

The most popular poker variants are as follows:

Draw poker
Players each receive five — as in five-card draw — or more cards, all of which are hidden. They can then replace one or more of these cards a certain number of times.
Stud poker
Players receive cards one at a time, some being displayed to other players at the table. The key difference between stud and 'draw' poker is that players are not allowed to discard or replace any cards.
Community card poker
Players combine individually dealt cards with a number of "community cards" dealt face up and shared by all players. Each player will attempt to make the best five card poker hand using the community cards and their own face down cards. Two or four individual cards may be dealt in the most popular variations, Texas hold 'em and Omaha hold 'em, respectively.

That depends if the game is open or closed, if is closed you will take five cards, with this cards you can make diferent combinations like a pair or a poker or maybe an a imperial flower thats the most powerful but if you dont have the chance at thie frst hand you can change 4 of the 5 and then you show the cards if you have the more powerful you win, if you play the open one you will recive 2 cards the the cardmen will show three cards you see your cards and the cards that he show you if you think you can make any combination with your cards you continue and then the cardmen will show you one more if you think you can continue you continue, the cardmen will show you one more card then if you have the best you win

rule 1 play no more than every third hand.
rule 2 its better to raise than call,
rule 3 if u cant beat what u see, fold
rule 4 if your first to act, raise or fold (dont call)
rule 5 if you think u have the best hand, bet
rule 6 look around the table, if u dont see a mark (weak player), then you are the mark!
rule 7 leaning forward during play is a sign of weakness
rule 8 leaning back is a sign of strength
rule 9 pick on the weaker players first
rule 10 never bet what u arent willing to lose! in other words its better to fold a small winning hand, then trying too hard and losing a bigger hand.
