He symbolizes a change in how his town thinks. He is going against what everyone thinks is right by defending Tom Robinson, a black man, so he is changing the way society feels about the blacks. He could also symbolize a mockingbird like the title says. All he is trying to do is help out an innocent man, but People are still trying to hurt him and kill him. Just like a mockingbird, he only is violent when defending his children.

I guess he could symbolize the justice system. Justice is supposed to be blind and fair (picture the lady holding the scales of justice blindfolded). Atticus was the only one willing to defend a black man accused of rape. Everyone deserves a right to a trial and access to the judicial process, guilty or not. Everyone thought he was guilty, though we know he wasn't, but Atticus ignored the pressure and threats of society to see that true justive prevailed, of course we know how it ends. He represented the American ideas of freedom, justics, and equality that the country was founded on.

I think that he symbolises the change of attitudes towards race. How people should feel and act towards people of any color. He protects the man on trial because he thinks he is innocent (and really is) and that he shouldn't go to jail no matter what color he is...
