most anywhere in the USA makes for a good road trip. I would go to the small towns in the Midwest or the Plains states. That would be great open road territory.

Depends on where you want to go. I have taken the California highway before from San Fran to San Diego. The drive is great and very scenic. You hug the ocean almost the whole trip and there are a lot of nice little towns to stop in and eat, shop or just chill for awhile.
In the Midwest, The Vice-Presidents highway runs through the center of Indiana. Very senic with a lot of hills and trees. Again, a bunch of little towns with nice restaurants and some of the best antique shops in the country.
The Southeast has highway one that runs the Florida coast and ends at mile marker 0 in Key west. I do not need to tell you how nice that drive is in a convertible.

Since the question is wide open, let me tell you what the best drives in the US are assuming you like great scenery... Start in Denver, take I-70 across the rocky mountains, stop in Glenwood springs, CO if you can. Head west into Utah, and drop south to see Arches N.P. if you have time. Go back to I-70 ends at I-15. Head south to Zion N.P. then to the bright lights of Las Vegas. South of Vegas, 15 will take across part of Death Valley to Los Angeles. See Hollywood, Santa Monica pier, and Malibu. Head back east to Arizona. See Sedona if you have time, but of course, do NOT miss the Grand canyon. Ok, so thats the best of the US in my opinion.
A close second would be Seattle to San diego... take I-5 south to get a view of Mt. Rainier, St. Helens, and Mt. Hood by the time you get to Portland OR. If you can detour east for a while on I-84 out of portland so you can see the Columbia river gorge. Take i-5 south again to US 199 that leads you over to the CA coast and Redwoods N.P. Take the coast down to Frisco and see the sights there. Continue south on CA highway 1 (the PCH) The coast from San Fran to LA is outstanding! thats my two cents. have fun!

And it would help to know what you like to see and do. There are some very nice trips through New England, but not if you are interested in Spanish Missions. Like beaches with large rocks and sunsets over the water? Stay away from the east coast of Fla. Try US 101 down Oregon or Calif State Rt. 1 from Monterey south to Santa Barbara. Want to pan for gold? Travel along Rt 49 in California, lots of history there also.

It would help to know where you would start from (where you live ... what state/city), how far you want to go, and how much time (and money) you want to spend. If you can add this information I can give you some suggestions.
