Well my husband was employed for the same company making $20 an hour for the past 9 years and walked into work one day and they said that they no longer needed him 3 weeks before Christmas! We have two young sons and I was a stay at home mom with a chronic illness. We had to close out out 401k just to pay off the car and after no luck of finding a job after a year had to move in with my parents. If they weren't alive we would be on the streets homeless right now.

somewhere i recently read that about 40% of folks live from paycheck to paycheck, so for them that would probably about 90 days before they were evicted (based on state varying laws re: that). there are just too many variables to consider, but i bet most folks wouldn't have a home within, oooooh, six months, if they had zero income.

I bet a lot of people are just a few paychecks away!! You got to build up that savings - just in case.
