A metaphor is commonly confused with a simile which compares two subjects using "like" or "as". An example of a simile: "He was as sly as a fox."
Metaphor comparison of two unlike things using the verb "to be" and not using like or as (as in a simile.)
Example:
He is a pig.
Thou art sunshine.
"My love is a red, red rose."
Causing harm to others when none is done to you is a dog that bites the hand that feed it.
(not a good metaphor)

that's actually a simile (may be helpful come test time) and
causing harm to others when none was done to you is like making a promise you just can't fulfill.

... a dog that bites the hand that feeds it. (It's a cliche, but I think it works. This is hard because it's so general.)
Edit: Hey Henry, great minds...

cutting off your nose to spite your face
p.s. it's a similie, not a metaphor. anytime you use like or is to compare, it's a similie.
