Though there are lot more people wear western dresses now a days, Sarees, Kameez, Kurta, Salvar, Pyjama and Dhoti are still very popular. Malls are like those you see in USA. Glass buildings are seen not only in Delhi and Mumbai but in places like Panipat. Youngsters still prefer to talk in English laced native language. Bollywood movies and music is still popular. People now prefer watching Hollywood movies over Omar Sharif plays and Punjabi Pop over Ghazals. Municipal schools and colleges do not force uniform in many places. All other schools have uniforms. Cold drinks still taste wonderful in Delhi summer.

70 years ago if one was to say india is conservative, fully cultured, then they would be correct. Today that would be a stereotype, however in the villages/ rural areas that still exists. In the cities such as mumbai, bangalore, hyderabad and new delhi people are becoming quite westernized from the clothing and just the overall style. The malls are amazing. For fun people go to the movies(we have the largest film industry in the world.), the mall, clubbing(popular among college/youth), bars, shoot some pool, bowling and cricket. India is growing big time! Almost everyone has a cellphone. While things are getting westernized the fusion and mixture between western and Indian culture is quite fascinating. While a person wears jeans and a tank top one day, the next day the person may wear Indian clothing at some festival or event. People in India love to dance as well and listen to music!India also has some of the most friendly people!

It really depends on where you go in India. The larger cities are very crowded version of American cities. People wear suits, skirts, jeans, saris , salwar kameez, a lot of fusion clothing like a kurti (short kameez) with capris or pants. Its very diverse. The smaller towns and villages which make up about 60-70 % of india are still pretty rural. The clothing there for women specially is largely traditional.
As far as amenities go pretty much everyone excepts some tribals in remote locations have tv's radios dvd players and computers. Air conditioners are available in most places in the large cities and in all the mid to higher end food joints in the smaller towns. None in villages. Cars are pretty much everywhere but the quality depends on the social strata of the person that owns them.
On the whole its an interesting mix. I'm from Bombay and it has changed more in the last 10 years than it had in the last 100. 10-15 yrs more and I predict that India will be completely westernized. Dunno if that is always a good thing though!!

India is as safe or as dangerous as the USA. While the northern states may be more unsafe than the southern states, India as a whole is a very safe country to travel. Choose the southern states of Kerala (God's Own Country), Karnataka, Tamil Nadu or Goa, the tourists' paradise. If you are too much concerned about your safety, avoid New Delhi, Agra (Taj Mahal), Kashmir.

india is a big country
evyone has a different choice here
according to me one can daily wear jeans and t shirts and we still hav the unifoms in schools b'coz it shows evryone equally
if this will not so then the rich ones will wear very fancy clothes and the middle class will feel bad therefore thisi nice to have uniform
and india is special as it is unique

i don't know how u define the modern ?
but , Yes India do changed as we do accept changes..
about Attire :
do wearing jeans with t-shirts depicts modernity..well No! ..we used to believe in wearing stuff where we feel comfortable
traditional wear is always the important part of life..but we love to wear jeans and t-shirts..on regular days...
Yes we do prefer..Uniform in schools-- as india is diverse cul;ture and we got peoples of differnt statures...and we don't beleive in showing off our latest collections..of clothing lines...in schools..
currently more then 1,000 malls in the making..and more then 500 are operational in India
regular clothing stores are neccessity ..but we do spend on regular clothing ..but we do know our limit...

India is a country with beautiful unity in diversity.
people from different social, financial and geographical condition wear different clothing.
what one wear does not make one modern or out of fashion.

India except its poverty of 60% not less developed in all these areas. They wear what ever western people.
It is changed socially &Morally too. pre marital sex is not a big thing & love marriage is o.K. too
Poor people don't know what they are they are trying to westernise & forgetting their own culture.
