Speaking as a dad who is about to have one of those 40something birthdays,,,,,
Tickets to a local sporting event, if he's into sports.
A gift certificate to his favorite hardware store is always welcome
Gift certificates are always nice, to his favorite bookstore, music store, sporting goods store, whatever he's into.
Dinner at a nice restaurant is good,
A night at a comedy club with a good headliner was a nice gift I got two years ago.
And of course, we do accept cash, lol.

How about a gift card to JC Penney or Sears or a hardware store?

beer (if he likes drinking beer), a nice looking tie, poker kit (if he likes gambling), go could really go all out on this birthday. but u should realize money on gifts isnt everything, its the thought and love you put into it. make him a homemade gift. something useful.... the thought and love is all a dad wants for his bithday

buy a nice frame and write a letter to your dad telling him how much you love him, what you have learned from him, what he means to you.. and what you admire about him... stuff like that. Believe me that will mean more to him than anything you can buy.
another option is to buy a frame and put photos of you and your dad in it...â¥
