Before the Romans conquered the British Isles, women were equal and fought side by side with men. There has not been equality since. What supports this theory is that in pagan PreChristian, Britain, women's burial sites were found complete with weaponry in their grave goods. This wood strongly suggest that they were taking part in battle. They were also buried with ornamentation that suggested high stature. Brigid one of the ancient Goddesses of Ireland (still kept as a Saint), was deified which showed the respect that people of that time held for women. Older women were revered as crones because of the wisdom they carried from their long life. Catholic beliefs during the Burning times assigned to the the guise of witch. This caused them not only to lose their stature in society, their belongings but also their lives.
Many of the burial sites were in the shape of women's breast or wombs showing the esteem women were once held in by both men and women for the fact that they gave birth. This was before the Roman's brought their misogynistic ideals that felt women were more chattels then free humans.
Hope this helps.

Possible during Roman occupation, as the Roman social structure allowed much female latitude. Celts had a warrior aristocracy and though there were instances of women fighting alongside men, it was rare. Not that much is known about pre-Roman Celtic social structure in Britain, in spite of some peoples reliance on psuedo-myth.
