More power to them! My wife is a firefighter and dispatcher as am I. My belief isn't whether you're male or female, but can you do the job. My wife can pull hose, hoist ladders, charge a fire, rescue lives, save property and cut open cars with any man. The job is as physically demanding on a woman as a man and I've seen some men who can't do what she can do and she's had the exact same training they've had and was cut no slack. The men she works with watch her back just like she watches theirs. They trust her with their lives as do I and she could pull them out if things go south. So again, more power to them!

I think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread!!! Honestly, there's no reason why a woman isn't as capable as a man in this position. In fact, studies show that women are great multi-taskers, which means they're better at watching for danger while working to put out the fire. On top of that, there are bound to be situations where a smaller body is an advantage over a bigger body, which means that a woman is the ideal candidate.

In our small town (population 12,000), we have two female firefighters, and every time I see them around town, I can only smile out of pride!!

Some can do the job, some can't. It appears that after 10+ years though that most female firefighters are injured to the point of not being able to do the job anymore. This is not based on any large scale study, as I believe should be done. It is based on my anecdotal observations.

I believe that the increased injury rate for female firefighters is due to their generally smaller frames and body composition. Women need to push their bodies to a higher level of their potential than men in order to do the job, and just like a motor pushed to the top end of its potential there is a higher incidence of breakage.
