Summer,
Sweetheart, any time you open a statement with the phrase "I don't intend to offend" people automatically know that you are going to offend them. So, they go on the offensive. Those of us from the South do get somewhat offended that people who have not been here watch a 30 year old movie like Deliverance and actually believe that we act that way. We do not and have worked very hard to break that stereotype that you are asking about. There are eerie people everywhere and most people find the accent very appealing. Believe me when I tell you that I have been up North and the men absolutely love a pretty Southern belle with a Southern drawl. Peole in the South work hard, play hard, are much friendlier and helpful than most other people in this country. We tend to give more to charities and are ready to help a neighbor in need whether we know them or not. We have some of the best Universities in the country and some of the most cutting edge technology. The Masonite corporation was founded here in my town. The people that own and operate Sanderson Farms chicken also started their factory and live here in my town. Also my daddy and another gentleman started the largest manufacturing company for electrical transformers in the world(Howard Industries you can look it up on the net jsut type Howard Industries Laurel,MS in your search engine) here in my hometown. So don't be surprised that people who have worked so hard to overcome the "Hollywierd" stereotypes like the one you are asking about get offended when they find a question like yours.
In answer to your basic question, as a registered nurse I do from time to time still run into some very "backwoods" sort of people. They are the minority though not the majority of the representative group that makes up the Southern states of America.

Well, dawlin, I am from south Mississippi (which is not south of America, but a southern state in the United States, but perhaps they don't teach you yankees geography).
I like country music, including classic country which you may consider "straw chewing guitar playing", however, I also like other types of music.
I graduated collage, served in the United States military during our conflict in Vietnam (notice, capital letters, but I guess you yankees don't need to use them).
I am also a published author, and considered by quite a few an expert in astronomy, physics, and mathematics.
I do have an accent, however it does not show up when I type, nor is so bad that I have trouble conversing with people from all over the country when necessary.
By profession, I am an operting engineer, and on weekends, I am in charge of a 53 story building in New Orleans. I have to worry about the climate control and all electrical problems that may come up, and also do electrcial and control repairs that can not be done during the week.
I read profusely, and, while some of it is fiction, I also keep track of discoverys in most branchs of science and technology.
With a little bit of prompting, I could explain to you how Einstein derived his famous formula E=mc^2 from the results of an experiment that failed. That is if you could keep up with the math. I usually try to keep it simple for yankees, but sometimes they get lost when I get to calculus.
But, I guess I'll always be a straw chewing, squeal piggy inbred to you. . .

Awwwww....well bless your little heart.
I am Southern to the core, Alabama born and bred. I have two college degrees and often find that in order to converse with other people (from both the north and the south), that I have to use small words.
The movie "Deliverance" is about the mountain folk in North Carolina, not the deep south. The "deep south" is Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia.
"Guitar playing" is not exclusive to the south, and my poor hillbilly soul is offended by your ignorance, "squeal piggy inbreds".....you really should stop watching movies if your that impressionable. Read more history...may I suggest the British royal family lineage.
I have personally never met any one like the people you have described.

No, I actually don't. If I chew my straw something in my brain tells me that something is not right. When I see a straw with chew marks on it, I blame myself for damaging it (not in a hateful, self-loathing way though) and urge myself to get a new one, but I'm also very conscious of how much trash I produce, so I just don't chew my straaws in the first place. I think I might have OCD though...

Surely, surely you must realize that to base your viewpoint (and such a negative one) of an entire group of people on a fictional Hollywood movie is very silly.
Whether you meant to offend or not, the stereotype IS offensive.
I've never met anyone from the south like you described. In fact, I'd be willing to bet, were you ever to vacation in one of the southern U.S. states, you'd find the people gracious and the countryside beautiful. And -- I'm going to do some stereotyping here myself -- I bet you'd find the eatin' mighty good!
Seriously, though, don't EVER let yourself be so negatively influenced against other people by a single piece of fiction.

Well, judging by all the mispelled words, bad grammar, and poor sentence structure, I'd think you were exactly the "piggy inbred" you were asking about. :)
