I'm not American so can only conjecture.In the U.K. I don't think that many people refer to their parents as sir or madam as their relationship is not of this kind.Their relationship is much more loving and it would be more usual to call your parents mum and dad, without any loss of respect. It would perhaps be more usual to call elderly strangers sir or madam and this would always be a sign of respect not fear.They would use these terms unless the relationship became more informal and other names might be used,either surnames like Mr. or Mrs. Smith or even christian names if really friendly and close.

It would be out of respect. If you have heard of respect your elders that is what you would be doing when saying sir or ma'am.

It is out of Respect, we Americans respect our elderly. And to finish most free man don't fear anything or anyone not even satin himself.

It's a sign of respect. Back in the day, if you didn't, you would be in fear of beating from your parents! lol!
