The teams are looking for a place that has enough people to fill the stadium each time they play, so that they can get the most revenue. Therefore sparsely populated places are out. Also, most sports teams need some sort of assistance (financial and otherwise) from the community to build a stadium and maintain a franchise. Cities like NYC which have a huge population and many tourists can house multiple teams because there are enough people to attend.
