Being assertive is expecting and demanding fair treatment in a dignified and good mannered way. Having an attitude is expecting preferential treatment and being arrogant or rude. Big difference.

Rosa Parks was assertive. She refused to give up her bus seat in a quiet, dignified way. Paris Hilton has attitude. She expects better treatment than everyone else and is rude and vulgar.

I think a good general answer is how constructive the result is. Assertiveness is just being self-assured enough to be aggressively motivated. Aggressive does not mean anger just as confidence does not mean ego, it just means motivated self-assurance. Attitude however is all about the underlying feeling involved. It can be a good attitude or a bad attitude, it all depends on the context, which is why I look at how constructive the result is. Constructiveness is evidence of thoughtfulness and mature behavior.

Study pathological narcissism. Degree of narcissism is the best scale for maturity, constructiveness, and civilized behavior I have found.

Most people are not assertive, that is a very rare ting to find in a person. Most of it is just attitude. Most people have the feeling that they shouldn't have to take **** from anyone and that the are being assertive when they do not take it. The truth is that you do have to take **** from people or you will not function in the real world very well. Try being assertive with your boss and see how far that gets you. There is nothing wrong with being assertive, but to see someone who is truly assertive is very rare.

The main difference is Assertive is when you will stick up for your self, ask question you nominally wouldn't ask. There is nothing wrong with being assertitive.

Having an attitude is when you will speak all the time and only look out for yourself.

Assertive people state their case with as much class as possible when giving their opinion.
People with Tude get away with as much trash-talking as they can while giving their opinion.
Good luck
