look up the volcano KRAKATOA in indonesia, this had global impact for the next ten years,, the winters were colder, snow was deeper, summers hotter, and wetter, the summer storms much more severe, little difference in local or domestic political considerations, would be called real global warming by todays standards.

I agree with robert r. The greatest natural disaster during this period was the explosion of the Krakatoa volcano on August 26, 1883, and the resultant tsunami which drowned 36,417 people.

Spanish American War started in 1898. It wasn't really set off by the explosion of the Maine, but you can use that as a disaster.
