My son has a homeowrk project and we are stumped we need to find out what p stands for in music symbols.
The paper has a p and the teacher wants the design for it.

p stands for piano which means "soft".
pp however stands for pianissimo which means "very soft".

In music p stands for piano and it means "soft". I don't really understand the rest of the question though.

in music
p=Piano, which is soft music
pp=Pianissimo, which is softer than piano
mp=Mezzo-piano, which is half as soft as piano
mf=Mezzo-forte, which means half as loud as forte
f=forte, which is loud but not overly loud
ff=Fortissimo, which is very loud and often the loudest a musical piece will get
