I got this email and it said all kinds of neat facts! The one that really caught my eye was that turtles can breathe through their butts. I just want to know if it is really true!! If so, thats awsome!! :)

Kinda but not really.

Turtles usually breathe through nostrils, and CAN absorb some air through the linings of their mouths and neck.

A few kinds of turtles that tend to dive deeply for food can absorb some oxygen out of water using the tissues lining their cloaca- the one opening that reptiles use to defecate, urinate, and mate through.

Note-
- only a few turtles do this, and only under certain conditions
- the turtles in question still mostly breathe through their noses
- the cloaca is not really a 'butt'
