Its that time of year again...time to write a new Professional Improvement Plan and I am lost for new ideas. What are some goals fellow educators are using or have used?

Hi..

The school in which I teach has them....We have to create our own each year...we call them our personal annual goals..and if we meet them, we get a small bonus...or a day off...usually the day off is more then the bonus..because the day off is a paid one..lol..where as a small bonus..looks good on paper..but turns out to be a box of school supplies..lol

some of the goals I have used in the past..range from better communication with the families in which I teach..to more orgainization....to attending more workshops..to taking a course..

ie.
1. to organize the classroom..I set up a portfolio system for my students, binders for the teachers...that they can keep their papers in from workshops, meetings, etc...instead of letting them accumulate in their teachers mailbox/cubbies, etc.

2. Parent volunteer system: a binder listing all the volunteer opportunities for parents in and out of the classroom. In the binder is a brief description of what the job entails and approx number hours needed...

3. more workshops: I had a list of workshops I attended and a brief paper on it...(this one killed 2 birds with 1 stone..since you have to do so many workshops a year....so it helped with my annual goal and my to stay certified)

4. I put together a playground game book..activities to do on the playground. i took pictures of my preschool students engaging in these activities. It was a big hit..with the kids as well as the other staff for ideas....(and most of the ideas were from the students)

5. I stenciled the classroom ....we live near the beach..so I used sea shells and alphabet and number theme...(the classroom needed painting as well).

6. I was a mentor teacher to younger and newer staff...I helped them when they were in a jam with staffing, etc.

so ..be creative..what needs to be done or use extra help in your classroom/school. It will kill 2 birds with one stone...

good luck and have fun!

I always thought the best approach was the honest one -- never mind what the current educational buzz word may be. Choose an area where you genuinely want to improve. Eg. class room discipline, more efficient time management, creating tests which allow students to show what they know not what they don't, organize classroom material so that it becomes easier to find what you seek, or my favourite - carry out the plan completed in a previous year.

Does your district have any new initiatives this year? Perhaps that could be incorporated into your PIP. If you teach primary then anything in Early Literacy development is fine too. Good luck!
