I am just shy of being 8 weeks pregnant with our first child. I will be 37 years old this year so my doctors office suggests (but is not mandatory) to go in first for an early sonogram appt and I dont know why. Following that appt is the blood work and paperwork then the pap and physical etc. I dont know why I am nervous but I have not heard of any of my friends doing this? Wonder what they are looking? The appt is tomorrow and I am excited but nervous. Has anyone else's doctors office suggested this due to age? I feel great and cant wait to start my appointments but was just wondering if anyone has any input for me to help me relax????

I was 16 when I was pregnant with my first child and the doctor did an early sonogram with me to make sure the baby was in the right place. It is nothing to be alarmed about. I took a pregnancy class with my first child and there were some older women there and I specifically remember the instructor saying that women over 35 need to be monitered more closely during pregnancy. Due to "previous" findings. My mother was 40 when I was born. I also have had several older friends who have been through this.

You should be excited!! The only reason they are going to do a sonogram is because you are over 35. You are considered high risk. Just because you are considered high risk, you should not worry. I am 31 and have type 1 diabetes, thyroid problems, blood pressure and other issues. My doctor did a sonogram just to make sure that everything was okay. Maybe I am niave (sp?), but I was not worried. It was AMAZING to see the baby! The doctor said that everything looks great. He said that I just need to keep on top of my blood sugars and he will take care of the rest. The woman who said something about thinking about it as a chance to see your baby early was right! Be excited!

My ob told me that sonograms are bad and that I shouldn't have one. That was almost 15 years ago. Now, lots of research is coming out showing that they cause brain damage. So, it makes sense for you to be scared. I didn't have one with either of my children; I was 36 when pregnant with our second.

here's a snippet from one of the links below:
Acoustic exposure from modern ultrasonographic devices is capable of disturbing biological tissue to varying extent depending on the type of ultrasound examination and the particular tissue under investigation. There is no strong evidence that these biological effects present a serious health hazard, however, knowledge is incomplete, particularly from human studies. Although ultrasound induced heating can be significant in later pregnancy, it is unlikely that diagnostic ultrasound poses a significant thermal risk to the developing embryo when used according to published safety guidelines. Nevertheless, uncertainties remain, particularly for nonthermal effects in early pregnancy where shear stresses from radiation pressure may become an important factor. The likelihood of producing some biological effects can be enhanced by new procedures such as the use of gas encapsulated echo-contrast agents. The particular sensitivity of the embryo to physical damage together with uncertainties of both risk and benefit suggest that caution should be applied to the scanning of early first trimester uncomplicated pregnancy.

they are looking for a heartbeat, proper growth so far, they "date" the pregnancy by how far along everything looks, they are making sure there is only one baby in there :) They will measure the baby. It also gives you a first peek at your baby which is so neat since you don't feel any movement yet, it almost makes it more real, I know I've always cried at them lol. if you go to google and click on images and type in ultrasound 8 weeks, I think you'll be surprised at what you can see at 8 weeks. Congratulations on your baby :) try to relax

My mother did this3 years ago when she had my sister(she was 44). Since there are more risks the older you are, the doctor is just being cautious. The will be checking that all organs/limbs are growing correctly and the like. Don't worry, just think of it as an early chance to see your baby!
