Firstly, I'm not a Republican. I'm a Moderate Independant. I'm also a Poli-Sci student with a curiousity in Current Global Affairs. So, I'm just up for some good debate.
"94% of Shiites think its acceptable to attack U.S. forces"
Saddam was a friend of the Shah. He went to war with Iran over the Ayatollah. Once he was out of the picture, the Shiites had a new target: the US. Why you ask? Because we gave the Shah safe harbour, and later, failed to rally to the side of the Shiites, when they revolted against Saddam after Operation Desert Storm. Pretty simple, and not surprising. Why are you trying to make it sound like it's new news? Also, the current governance of Iraq has asked us to stay. If they tell us to go, I'm fairly certain we will.
Amazing that facts of historical record can be considered a wrong answer. Must be because it's not popular to hear the truth.

After all we've done for them. Not only did we unseat their dictator but we dissolved their entire government and barred all the ones with political knowledge (Sunni) from politics. We gave them a new government of our choosing complete with new leaders we hand picked We also disbanded their military and tried to construct a peacekeeping force from the ground up and when the civil war broke out we vowed to stay and throw even more people in to fight to protect all that we have done for them. maybe if they start appreciating all we've done for them we will work on getting the water and power back on 24/7.

You intimate that the responsible party for Iraqs woes is solely the United States.
When in fact, much of the murderous, raping, pillaging, decapitating, drill to the temple, mutilating debauchery is Iraqi-on-Iraqi. And the international response is zilch and the pan-Arab response is slightly better.
No one cares about Iraq, ESPECIALLY the Iraqis.
Bringing our troops home accomplishes what?
a) enforces the notion that the U.S. is weakening and can be attacked with relative ease by small bands of terrorists and with greater effect by larger organizations and independent states who know the response will be tempered after an Iraqi withdrawal
b) allow Iran and the Shi'ite movement to co-opt Iraq, it's economy and people and it's oil reserves. This will be disastrous for the Sunnis who actually move unfettered under American protection, only to attack the very forces that keep the Iranian National Guard from killing every Sunni between India and the Mediterranean
c) emboldens Iran to pursue development and deployment of nuclear weapons, knowing the next president would likely not send troops to counter such a move, given the 'disastrous' Iraqi campaign. Nations take decades to build, the spineless left/center of the U.S. wants Iraq to be free and clear of support and assistance inside 36 months. PREPOSTEROUS.
d) Signal to China and Russia that Central Asia and the Middle East are fair game, thereby reducing US influence in the region and empowering these two totalitarian regimes with more access to cheaper oil and a greater sphere of influence. By pulling out unilaterally when Iraq is in no shape to self-defend or self-govern in a stable manner, the U.S. is inviting its economic and military challengers to an even greater share of the world's riches, making life for Americans more expensive, less predictable and infinitely less secure.
e) Signal to U.S. allies in the region that the American commitment to protect freedom, support democracy and at the very least, stand by those who stood by us, is essentially a sham. More and more nations will align with Russia, China, Iran or the South Asian nations, and the anti-U.S. sentiment will grow, not abate, as even the smallest nations with a bit of economic influence will smell blood in the water.
Know this. Given the information available to ALL the world's governments (at least those represented in the U.N.), and given the decisions and actions of the Clinton AND Bush administrations, the U.S. was poised and did act, under the notion that Saddam was both circumventing the 18 resolutions passed in the UN to neutralize him, and was a reasonable threat to aid/abet terrorists with arms, cash and protection, in order to retaliate against American and Western interests.
That's why we went in, and that's why he's dead now. That is a quality accomplishment so far as human liberty and dignity is concerned, the man was a monster. Was the war managed well? Not at all. Was the war planned and executed in a way to accelerate Iraqi self-determination? No way. Is all the oil we're purportedly pulling out of Iraq worth the expenditures of the war ($30bil per month), NOT EVEN CLOSE.
America did this because Saddam was a threat to the world and the world, 18 times, announced this to Saddam and anyone else who cared to listen.
Do we want our troops back? YES! Do we quit the fight and abandon a difficult mission because we have no stomach for defending a democracy abroad that will help us protect ourselves from radical elements in the future? HECK NO. Freedom is not free. Not a comfortable, place your order and wait in the checkout line type thing. It is an ugly, brutal, life-absorbing undertaking to achieve and maintain.
MANY have forgotten that hundreds of thousands of lives were sacrificed so that we can spout eloquence and rubbish on the internet freely. So the United States could actually be United (even though that was up for confrontation a full 80 years after the nation was founded). It takes a LONG TIME to stabilize a nation that for 30 years was domineered by one, selfish, despotic, tyrant. It won't be easy, it won't be quick, it won't be cheap. But if we do abandon the Iraqis as many of them have abandoned Iraq, then what hope is there for open dialogue with transparent governments and unity among people seeking the same freedoms and privileges Americans take for granted?
You many not like war, or its cost, but you certainly enjoy the fruits of our soldiers' labor every day. If you support them, you demand the war is planned and executed better, you demand that Iraq is secured and self-reliant before we leave, you demand that our soldiers are taken care of 200% upon their return, and you demand of yourself a daily reminder of the price of the freedoms you enjoy.
Bring our troops home is great to say, but does nothing, absolutely nothing, for the intelligent discourse that a reasonable drawn down is predicated on. Lose the bumper stickers, read up on history and martial tactics and strategy and know the 360 degree truth about what you are demanding before you demand it.
I'm no Republican, but I'm no idiot either. Pulling out of Iraq now will spell blood on our streets within our lifetimes, and that is something I WILL NOT stand for. America has defended the weak and the needy, and we will continue to do so, in spite of the attempt of some to paint our mission as strictly a revenue opportunity disguised as a defensive maneuver. Preserving our nation and its borders and security is self-serving, and for that I am not ashamed. GOD BLESS AMERICA and freedom loving peoples everywhere.
