I dress quite androgynously most of the time, e.g, right now I'm wearing baggy combat jeans, a checked shirt & a blue t-shirt.

I also have shortish (shoulder-length) hair, and generally don't wear much make-up.

my mum tells me I should dress more effeminate, but I've never felt comfortable in frilly pink stuff.

however, I do agree to some extent. what kind of clothes could you reccomend that would look more girly without being really lame and pink? (I'm 5'6" size 14, & I'm 16 years old)

I also don't want to wear too much black or red, as most people seem to think I'm emo, and that sucks.

I'm kind of an indie kid rocker, don't want to go too far off that line... shoes-wise it's vans, coverse or slip-on ballet pumps, I generally can't get anything else my size.

I always shop here

www.delias.com

They've got some really cute logo tees that aren't too girly, but they're not tomboyish either.

And they've got some gorgeous shoes like converse.
And pretty pants.

:]

You dont have to dress in pink frills to be more feminine. Actually, you dont need frills at all. You can still dress very plain, but look more feminine.

You might want to try Lane Bryant. Their clothes are on the plain side but are fashionable and feminine but not overly girly. (They have petite sizes, too!) You could wear a short sleeve button down shirt or even a T-shirt that is cut to be more flattering and a pair of straight pants. Or you could even wear an athletic style skirt with sneakers or sandals and a feminine T-shirt.

I think the problem your mom (and you) have with the way you currently dress is the cut of the clothes and not the clothes themselves. You could look totally hot in baggy combat jeans and a blue T-shirt, but it has to be the right jeans and T-shirt.

If you want more info from me or you dont understand something I have said, please email me!

Good luck!

Here are some pieces that show what Im talking about:

I hate to say this because I'm a mother of a 16 year old girl (from the united states) but I firmly believe that you shouldn't for any reason do anything that you, yourself are uncomfertable doing.
HOWEVER.....seeing its dressing to be more girlish, I don't think its that bad.
I myself was aways the girl that wore ripped jeans combat boots and such.
I found that there are ways to keep your style but dress it up a bit by useing softer colours, adding accessories like girl type belts and a purse, maybe earrings, and as far as makeup goes I still don't wear it regularly, but in times when I Need to go out or when I need to go to work I find that a lite powder on the face with a hint of eyeliner and some gloss for the lips go a long way.

I dressed just like you for all of my teens and early 20's. I felt comfortable and at ease with myself. When I tried to dress more feminine I felt like a freak. But nowadays, although I don't run around in a frilly pink affair, I wear some cool pastel blouses, trousers, (cardies, too) and neat jackets. My husband has no complaints. Dress how you feel. And if you feel like a pink frilly day, go for it. We all change, but only when the time is right.
PS Have some fun with your clothes, too. Give your mum a surprise!

You being an Indie Rocker doesn't even come into it. Not that you've said as yet, but people who dress in black and then say 'people who follow fashion are sad'

ERRR take a look at yourselves. In my home town (colchester) they come in their swarms in black, they all look the same, and haven't even done it well.

The strange thing is I dress in jeans, stiletto heel boots, nice tops / zip up tops / nice jackets BUT i like exactly the same music that they do, probably even heavier music, but I don't look the part.

What I'm trying to say is, yes I like that sort of music, but why should it be you have to dress like this to listen to this. Wear what you are comfortable in.

If you want to be different you can still do it well. However, if you do want to start being a bit more feminine then try New look, Primark etc.

Yes the patterned tops can be dangerous but teamed with leggings or jeans you can wear pumps or shoes and still look different but funky.

If not, just try fitted plain tops with different colours layering and with darker jeans. Its easy when you get used to it.

It just annoys me that people feel they should conform to the 'norm' of their group. I'd feel like a t**t wearing what some people wear!

P.S I don't think many people unless under the age of 13 feel comfortable in frilly pink stuff.

Seriously wear whats comfortable for you, just because your a laydee why should everything you wear be pink?

Can't you be a Topshop princess, a rockstar too? ;-)

I would say mix your clothes, with feminine and more 'guy' eg. combats with a nice top or a skirt with a not so girly top or a jeans jacket, a dress on top of jeans . Don't worry about the makeup, you don't really need to/must wear makeup and nothing wrong with the hair, you can use clips or do some highlights.

First of all...Be yourself. It doesn't matter what everyone else thinks it matters what makes you feel good. If you don't like what your style is now then look through some magazines, watch some teen age shows with girls your age. See what they are wearing and see what catches your eye and try that style. You do not have to wear dresses to look feminine. I like crop pants with cute tops. Sandals are always good. You need to find your style. When you do you will feel great about yourself.

My mom and Dad actually enjoy that I'm not girly and enjoy the basketball and t-shirt look...You know, you don't have to change a lot...I didn't wanna seem like a total tomboy, so I match my basketball shorts and athletic pants(boy pants, actually VERY comfy! lol) with a logo tee or a girlish tee. I would also suggest you stick with Nike's, in a white/green color combo.

Your hair can change your whole outfit. So can small jewelry. Depending on where you live, mix and match styles with your normal outfit!

well i think your mum is right, she probably wants you to make the most of yourself. try to stay true to yourself and style though, even i dont tend to wear pink. try and start with accesories such as bangles, a fitted top and then work around that. i find it best to mix and match.
use a bit of mascara and light coloured gloss if you want to go for the natural look.
dont worry- it'll all seem enjoyable soon.
