Does this seem like a good computer for general at-home use?

It's a fine PC, however,
.... I guarantee you that within a year you will wish you had something more powerful (dual core CPU...AMD or Intel)
& within 6 months you will want a larger hard drive (at least twice that size).
Vista Home Premium has the Media Center feature which allows you to record TV on your PC ....
.... having that on an 80GB drive is not a good idea.
Video files take up LOTS of space.
When you start wanting to keep movies on your hard drive (as I do) for quick and easy access you will need at least 200GB.
More RAM (especially with VISTA Premium) would also be a good idea....go for 2GB.
The monitor is way ahead .....& probably worth as much as the PC itself.

Depends. It is good as any other with a slow processor for just getting on the internet and writing a letter.
Without the monitor what is the price.the Sempron 2400 is an "old chip" now. Of course, they probably have jillions new in a box.
Without the monitor I would not spend more than $200. They had one on the dell site for $359.
Buy for the future now. At office depot they had a machine for $375 after $150 mail in rebates. It has 1 Gb Ram, 160 Gb Hard Drive, and a 17" CRT Monitor. But the chip is a AMP Athlon 6400 processor 3500 +. If you go to the Dell site the Sempron is not listed for comparision. It is just a matter of shopping around and ALOT of reading.
Anyway, read the pcworld.com articles and cnet.com articles on how to buy a computer and how to build a computer. They will have all the stats and explanations of what is going on. Once you read this then all the above will make since. Like trying to give a 15 year old, dating advice. They have to see for themselfves. You will see when you read the articles.
Remember whoever sells it too you will tell you what you want to hear, even Dell. But If you read, then go back you will notice Dell does not use certain chips for comparing cause they are old. And if you are going to buy check out their refurbished outlet store for better deals.
Check the download section at these sites for some free downloads. Also bookmark them and you can learn about computers.

Looks like a great computer for word processing, video, and internet surfing.
If you're interested in gaming scene, you might want to look for a computer with different processor than Sempron.

Its ok considering its a dell. (propriotary machines are hard to upgrade)
The processor is a little slow
Ram is ok but needs another gig soon
HD, video card, and monitor are fine unless you are gaming or watching DVD's then you need to get a better video card
Monitor is sweet....maybe a little overkill unless you are watching movies
