Alot of technology has come into play since I was young. It seems like every toy has to have buttons and noises, even the baby toys! Kids were satisfied with simpler things back then. I see pictures of me as a baby playing in a walker with no toys on it, just a plain walker. Now, if you go to the baby section in the store, you see walkers with dozens of flashy noisemaking toys on them. Its enough to make a kid have seizures. Play with kids nowdays involves too much technology, which doesn't let kids use their imagination as well. They can't make up their own stories and noises with the toys, because the toys already do that for them. There's less physical activity going on also, and more computer and video games. These can teach kids some things, but too much is a bad thing, because they are so addicting and fast paced, it leaves everything else viewed as boring in comparison. My children are allowed to play video and computer games for only a certain amount of time each day. Then we go outside, or if it's cold, we do something active within the house, like obstacle courses, hide and seek, etc. I try to buy them the old fashoioned toys, like Legos and Lincoln Logs when I can find them. The point of kids playing together is to teach them important life skills, like working as a team, and problem solving, sharing, etc. Even schools are cutting out playtime. I read an article that stated that a few have even done away with recess altogether! My son hates school. He is in kindergarten, and every monday he comes home with 3 pages of homework. He is so full of energy when school is out, because he tells me all they do is sit in the classroom all day and do schoolwork, with only 20 minutes of recess. People are beginning to forget the important role that play has in young children's lives, and it's sad.

50 years ago we played outside all day long, only played inside if it was raining or too cold. We played more traditional roles such as dolls, and house, under a shade tree.We also had a lot of physical activity like riding bikes and skating and jumping rope. There were only a few TV shows for us to see.
I think the most important functions of play are using the imagination, it gave us time to dream and think.
Also it is important to learn to give and take in relationships with peers and give and take criticism, and learn to take the hard knocks. Its good sometimes to just be with a group of kids without the parents right there and they just work it out among themselves.

What approximately them? right this is the final prognosis: this is none of your business enterprise. do no longer like it? do no longer do it. As primary, what you god bots "think of" is beside the point. Are you so small minded which you would be able to no longer settle for the certainty some everybody is born distinctive. It is a good question.
In the fifty plus years I have seen drastic changes in the playing of children.
In our child hood all school had play ground, eachday compulsorily there was a period of say 45 minutes allotted to Play.all students used to play different games.running, kabaddi, cricket, volleyball, football etc were being played.there used to be a drill master who was there to see that all children do this drill for atleast 30 minutes a day.this warming up and muscle toning exercises helped a lot and children used to be healthy and more immune. All children irrespective of their social status and caste etc used to unitedly enjoy the games and they became friends and that friendship is continuing still after five decades. How happy taht is?
Playground for each school was compulsory then and space was available and it was naturally available.Children used to play for about one hour after school hours and went home.this helped improve their health and there was no term called stress those days.
nowadays the space is scarce.the schools are located in upper floors of multi storied buildings. The management can't afford to have separate play ground. There are no drill teachers and separate classes for play.
Play has changed its form.To sit before a mechine and do some thing, and going to a gym and doing some forcible exercises in a time schedule, burning calories and checking weight and doing other medical tests are the order of the day.
The beauty of that old days play is lost.I don't think it will come back again .
That was a golden period.I the curriculum of school all subjects were so integrated.
Oh..what a joy to think of those days.I pity the children of today for the loss they suffered.
Let us hope the Govt. will make serious ans sincere efforts in this direction and help our children to be hale and healthy without STRESS.

I believe that playing sports has developed into organized sports and playing with machines has become more popular. I believe an important functionality of playing is being able to relate with someone better, learn values, learn from following rules yet not making gmaes unfun, and overall learning to tolerate others and cooperate.

To play is to have fun. It has changed since I was young, I believe, in that there was more physical exercise involved. Nowadays you can sit in front of a tube twiddling control paddles and call it "play."

When i was young we played outside our homes, in the streets, climbing trees, running and jumping, sharing,
Now kids are playing video games, structured games.... huh!
Children need to have unstructured play time.... no rules made by adults. They play, they negoitate, make their own rules, hurt others, get hurt, are bossy, are submissive, learn to play as a team, learn to play by themselves, learn to share, learn their own strenghts and weaknesses, learn to be leaders, learn to be followers, learn to innovate new games, learn to have fun, create relationships, break relationships, fight, make friends, take sides, gang up, play with all age groups, understand the other person, stealing, being punished, being kind.....
Wow! free play time is the best chance for character development for any individual... We should not deprive children of this opportunity
