When in fact he escalated it? Folks. read your history. He resigned due to WaterGate. It was Congress that ended the war by cutting the funding shortly after Ford took office. Nixon wanted the war to keep going. It was wrong to be in Viet Nam then and it is wrong for us to be in Iraq now.

Time line, including congressional bills and amendments as they related to the war.

labdocto…Nixon also escalated the war. And sent in more troops before he pulled them out. He also escalated the air strikes against N. Vietnam including on hanoi, while he was pulling out the ground troops. Neither party is innocent in any of this. and, I contend that for this Iraq war as well.
And, who says I hate my country for Christ's sake. I question the leaders and their wisdom and leadership and that's the same thing as hating my country. My god, you people need to grow up.

You're right we should be out of Iraq, Bt I went to Nam, and Nixon laid ALL the Groundwork to get out, and in 72...before he resigned...no one was being deployed. Nixon, not Ford.

Nixon ordered bombing north of the 37th parallel 1 year after Johnson stopped it. When it was obvious kicking there butts that way was not bringing the N. Vietnamese to the negotiations table he ordered the mining of the North Vietnamese harbor. This brought them to the table and the war was over within 4 months of Ford's Administration.
Funding had absolutely nothing to do with the end of the war.
He ended a debacle that was escalated by Kennedy then really brought to full military might by Johnson.
But by the sound of your post, these events were before your time and someone has misdirected you.

Right! Let me take you back one more step - Congress ended the war by cutting funding because WE, THE PEOPLE hit the streets in the millions - students, adults, old people, school children in every city, every town, Washington 24 hours a day.

We could bring this one to a halt too - but too many Americans are too complacent. They are more interested in their new SUV, new home, latest gadget. They, in fact, don't really care about the war at all except they are sick of hearing about it.

Too bad. There are some who are protesting. Every protest that is held will draw more and more people but everyone should get out there and demand that madman in the Oval Office put an end to the carnage in this illegal war.

I served two tours of duty in Viet Nam. Regardless of your opinion of the war. Congress cut off the funding to the troops and to South Viet Nam. That led to the murder of Millions in Laos, Cambodia and Viet Nam. Some of the people that were in Congress then are still there now. If we withdraw or cut off funding it will turn into another Killing Fields.

He did it to appease the revolting public and to try to cover up for his crimes with the Watergate affair. He was using it as a distraction to hide his real agendas just like George Bush is using the Iraq War as a distraction for his own.

Relevantly answering this Question:
People think that because there are grey spots in history when things just kind of blur in the thoughts of the masses. This is an example of one of them. All anybody knows is that the war ended sometime between Nixons term and Fords term, and they just jump to the conclusion that is was Nixon.

Ever hear of the peace treaty signed on January 27, 1973? The war was over and our troops came home.

Then in 1974 the Democrats in Congress cut all aid to South Vietnam, violating our treaty obligations. The North took note that the South was abandoned, and Saigon fell on April 30, 1975.

I saw it all, at the time. Please review the facts.

I take my lessons from Vitenam too. Don't let the Democrats sell out our friends and reward our enemies.
