The membranes are the little white flaps that are on the yellow piece. A spare set was included with the pump and they also sell them in the store.

I have only replaced mine once (its been through 2 kids) and that was when one of them tore. I do however wash my breast pump after each use. Even all of the little pieces, and I wash the tubes once a week. I am very careful so that my babies dont get spoiled milk or tainted milk. It can cause diarrhea and upset tummies.

I dont think that you need to replace them unless you lose one, or you tear one. I think they include them because they are such small pieces and people tend to stick their pump pieces into the dishwasher for sterilization benefits. If you are concerned call the hospital where you had your baby, ask to speak to the Lactation Consultant. They are experts when it comes to questions like that.

Good Luck

I have only had my pump 3 weeks so I cannot be sure. I went on the Medela site and couldnt find anything in regards to the membranes. However this is the email addy for the Lactation Consult of Medela : ibclc@lc2medela.com . Maybe e-mail her and ask, she'd most likely know. Could you tell me when you find out, as I'd like to know aswell. If I don't hear from you, I'll e-mail her myself.

NatureCare.com says that Medela recommends replacing the membranes every three months or so. i would say the or so depends on how often your pumping??

I don't wash the tubes very often. But the rest I wash after every use, so that spoiled milk isn't mixed with fresh milk.
