I want to know what is involved with filing a lawsuit against a major company due to faulty parts (i.e. steering wheel).

You can start by searching for other complaints with the NHTSA-odi
That's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration- office of defects investigation

It's not the easiest site to navigate but it is a government site & that would be the place to complain & search for other complaints.
It will also let you search for recalls & technical service bullitins.
