I've used yahoo to search divorce lawyers, and gotten a whole list, 10 pages! How do I know who to pick?? I can't afford it either. Any suggestions?

We have a daughter, will be a year in June. I'm sure he'll contest everything possible, even tho he said he wanted this. We don't talk, he won't answer my calls.

You can't work out abuse and adultery. I tried for 2 years.

I would pick a handful of lawyers and start making calls. If you don't have much money, see if those attorneys will accept a payment plan.

Try to contact those attorneys that offer free consultation. Interview 2-3 attorneys and make a decision based upon your comfort level and their experience handling similar cases.

Once you have talked with each attorney ask them "based upon your experience with similar cases such as mine, how much will I expect to pay for your representation?"

Lastly when you are going through this process always remember that those attorneys that specialize in family law / divorce law (meaning family law is the only law they practice) are probably better suited to represent you.

Good luck with your divorce!

Depends on whether the divorce is contested or not. You can always try legal aid. Before hiring a lawyer, try hiring a Paralegal first, Theyre much cheaper and just as good as a lawyer. They do all of the attys legwork anyway so save the money, especially if you dont have any. You can always do the paperwork yourself and really save, especially if you and your spouse can still sit down and work things out amicalably. Its not that hard as long as it isnt contested. Good luck

Go to www.martindale.com and fill in their names and cities. You want a lawyer with an AV or BV rating. Call around on prices. They vary widely. Good luck.
Another angle is to ask your divorced friends who they used and if they were happy with the representation. If so, get the lawyer's name and call him or her.

you can go to a lawyer and have him pay for it. or you can get on your p/c get all the papers you need to file. then you don't need a lawyer. about 80.00 that's about all you pay. the best suggestion is to try to work it out. the baby needs the both of you
