ASHBY: A very small town near New Hampshire very cheap, but good houses
BELMONT: If you wanna be closer to Boston, come to Belmont. One of the best school systems in USA and small with nice resturants.
NEW MARLBOLO: REALLY far away from Boston, on the New York border, but nice.

There are some nice communities just south of Boston, such as Braintree or Quincy that have a wide range of housing. From affordable to astronomical. Same holds for towns like Stoughton or Abington. Check out boston.com's real estate section. They have in depth profiles of communities throughout the metro Boston area.

Head out towards the Worcester area and go south. THere area lots of affordable small towns with new england charm. If you are commuting to boston or worcester, you might not want to be way out there cuz it will be a long ride...

Bellingham and surrounding areas spring to mind.

South Shore, is your best bet.
Although there are some towns such as Brockton or Randolph that have a higher crime rate than others, most other towns are REALLY safe bets. Stay away from North Shore at all costs. In the city is too pricey and west of it is also pricey and gets way too much snow.

Just do your research on the town before purchasing.

Malden or Cambridge near Boston are both really nice. Unfortunately, if you're west of Boston, many of the suburbs are pricey (Newton, Wellesley, Weston). Actually check out Watertown or Waltham as well. Again, closer to Boston but on the western end.

you're better off looking at suburbs in the worcester area, the botson area is outrageous. look in towns like shrewsbury, grafton, auburn, paxton, holden, west boylston, etc. they are all nice towns that are very close to the city. take a look in the sunday telegram or look online at the worcester telegram's website for apartment listings.

Anywhere in Southern New Hampshire!
The Commute is not bed, no sales tax, and you don't have to pay all the stupid taxes of the Commonwealth!

If you are looking for a Boston Suburb, head up to NH!
