its on his left leg up really high no pain just looks swollen

call the surgeon the preformed the operation and ask them....they should have given you info on the aftercare. Or call your family doctor and ask them, dont ask people on here. Plus you didnt even say what kind of surgery it was so we really cant tell from your question on how to answer in the first place. CALL THE DOCTOR

are there 1 or 2 stitches on his head, or 50 staples on his back?
There should have been instructions from the doctor who took care of him. If it's not weeping anything, I'd just wash with soap and water, and leave open to the air....but again, depends on where it is on him.

Well it depends on what kind of surgery. My guess would be some neosporin and a sterile bandage.

well it depends where it is. to relieve pain and reduce swelling i would suggest ice unless otherwise indicated. a topical antibiotic will also help. childrens motrin will relieve pain. do not give asprin.
