I should add that I had already updated the BIOS to the latest and greatest version. The system does not have a seperate sound card installed in one of the extra slots, I am connecting to the "sound" port on the back of the computer, which is connected to the ASUS motherboard.

Win98 usually supports external hardware, very few boards would have integrated audio chips. I had the same problem once. What happened was that my sound card was a SoundBlaster Pro 5.0. I lost the CD for that and, I found it hard to download the sound driver, but eventually I was able to download it. And at first the driver didn't install properly, so i had to "force-install" it. When I did that, it worked. Try to check your sound card, (brand and model). Then try downloading the software from its website. Good luck!

You need to find out what model number your motherboard is if your PC was custom built or what model number your computer is if it's prebuilt such as Dell, Gateway, HP, Compaq, etc.

After finding that out Google the model's drivers for it. Go to the manufacturers site you'll find it there.
