I have a house with an open layout. I have the perfect room for my ferrets - but there are no doors to the room. I have to find something that will cover a two foot gap and a five foot gap between the walls. I need to find something that they can not climb over and that is not incredibly ugly. I have not been able to find anything on the internet. Any suggestions?

Take measurements of the width of the area you would like to in close. Go to a place like Home Depot and have them custom cut a piece of clear Plexiglass- put hinges on them and a lock mechanism and you can open and close securely at will. Since it will be clear it won't be an eye sore. I was an Animal Control Officer for many years, I have seen this work for people. Good Luck!

What do you think of this....

Have you seen "solar" shades? They're becoming more and more common in commercial places. They're a window shade that has bunches of tiny perforations in it that allow some light through, but not all. The most recent place I've seen them, and used in a unique way, was in...Wal-Mart! Know how H&R Block sets up a little cubicle in Wal-Mart during tax season? The cubicle was made of this "solar shade" material strung tautly between what looked like dressed-up PVC pipes.

Now, a ferret could probably pretty easily climb up and over a little half-wall such as in the H&R Block cubicle. But if you hung honest-to-god solar shades over your doorways, top to bottom, and found a way to make them clasp to the walls (ah!--another, related idea--"doorless" screen doors, which are basically big sheets of screening framed in magnets or velcro to stick to the doorframe--that sort of thing!), you might be able to thwart those little boogers. And you won't be blocking light from one room to the next--I don't know about you, but I like that idea.

One caveat--those solar shades can be expensive (I know, I bought one--but I LOVE it). Another caveat--your little boogers may prove able to chew through them (or the doorless screen doors). But go check them out (go to a blinds & shades store, or windows & floors type of place--Hunter Douglas definitely makes them); take a look, see if this will work.

Try baby gates...there are ones that expand to 6 feet or more, and are different kinds of materials...if that doesn't work, make gates out of plywood, and cover them with fabric (use a staple gun) of your choice...
