Insanity...doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. It is going better, we're entering our fifth year there instead of our seventh or tenth. Stick a note on my headstone and let me know when Iraq becomes a democracy.

We have learned from history. We know why we didn't prevail in Vietnam, and, if we could do it all over, would win because of what we learned since then.
By the way, there is no similarity between the two battles. People inevitably use the tired, old Vietnam comparison when they talk about a prolongued military conflict, but the situation in Iraq is completely different. There are people in Iraq who don't think the new constitution has a place for them in the new Iraqi society, so they refuse to participate in the democratic process.
In Iraq, we are only fighting a relatively small group of people; the rest of the country want democracy. They risked a lot even to vote; there were death threats from the terrorists, but people showed no fear, and came out to vote in amazing numbers.
We know what we did wrong in Iraq, and armed with this information, we are making great progress transforming Iraq into a fledgling democracy.

I think I saw the same speech recently. It sent chills up my spine how almost exact it was in words. I saw Bush give a speech a couple of weeks ago on television and then saw Nixon's speech. It was so creepy that we haven't come that far at all.
Dave.....No, Nixon had to resign from office. It was congress that cut the funding to the war forcing the military to come home. This happened when Ford was in office. Nixon wanted to escalate the war even more. Vietnam is very comparable to Iraq. You need to research the history of it more.
No expert ever said that if we stayed in Viet Nam longer that we would have won. The soldiers moral was very low because the millions of Vietnamese just kept fighting. And, the officers on the ground kept lying to the soldiers about what was happening on the ground just to keep the soldiers going. That war was so wrong on so many levels. And, basically the soldiers had to quit just because of so much battle fatique. My god, you people who think we could have won that war just don't get it. You really need to read history and learn so we don't repeat this horrible war mentality.

I believe it was Nixon that actually got us out of Vietnam, no?
Regardless of the coincidence in speeches, how can you possibly compare Vietnam to Iraq?

Yes, if the Democrats in Congress don't cut the funds to Iraq like they did South Vietnam.

Let's see, what happened in Vietnam....the liberals cut off spending, demanded troops to come home, and then disgraced the troops when they got home......sounds allot like what the liberals are trying to do again, doesn't it???
The only difference right now is that they don't have the votes in the house and senate to cut off the spending, to handcuff our soldiers so they can die faster, and be able to spit on our soldiers when they return.......at least not yet; can't you see how the liberals haven't learned anything since the 70's??? Guess it was just too much fun to live in the past.

Nixon actually pulled troops out of Vietnam, LBJ put them all there, and started the war.
