Hello, I wanted to get a little feedback as to general opinions when it comes to novels.

I am writing my first novel as well as a series of short stories. I will not go into specifics but for me I take the most delight in the people. Their development, their behavior, their "souls" so to speak. I also as a former Philosophy student like to raise questions, though any such concept is easily swallowed.

I do have plots of course and am giving great care to a cohesive narrative. But I think they are not as elaborate as some other books.

So my question is this: Would you be more interested in a novel with a flashy plot or something stressing the personal aspects of the characters like I am going for?

Definitely emphasis and exploration of characters. Novels that have a lasting effect on people are those with relatable characters/narrators. Ever read Russian literature? That's the kind of book I like to read. The kind with colorful, memorable characters that are explained and explored extensively. Good luck! I look forward to seeing your book on shelves.

definately characters.
anyone can create a (somewhat) interesting plot, but it takes someone with talent to create good characters. Without good characters, a book's plot is boring, because why should we care? Put in some well created characters and all of a sudden we are on the edge of our seats, wondering what will happen.

I guess I'd go for something stressing the personal aspects of the characters, like you said you were going for.
Good Luck:)
Ps. Let me know when you've written the book: short_lover_@hotmail.com

Personal Aspects DEFINITELY! This is so much more interesting to read and makes you feel close to the character which is very important in novels. I think the direction you are headed in is very good.

Characters, without a doubt. One book that sticks in my mind here is Flowers in the Attic, which explored people's characters and emotions in a wonderfully vivid way.
