FYI, I'm running Windows XP.

I've been told many times that the number of programs I have that load at start-up seriously affects my computer's performance. Is this true? How do I access those programs to alter whether or not they load automatically?

And, if I cut it down to the bare minimum of programs at startup, will I notice a difference?

Before you try anything else, try using the (free) Microsoft System Configuration utility that comes with Windows XP.

You can run it by clicking Start -> Run and type "msconfig".

It will let you manage all the different places where programs can register themselves to be run when the computer starts (there are more than you'd think!).

There are various programs that will help you do this, but they require installing yet another program, and many of them cost money.

The best one I have found is free at microsoft.com. Do a search for sysinternals and you will find several free downloads for analyzing your system. The one that tells you everything that starts when you boot is called "AUTORUNS" . You can clear the check box associated with the programs to stop them from loading when you boot. If you can get your process list down to 30 or so, you will see a difference in speed.

I recommend the use of the Windows startup manager http://www.neosoft-tools.com/windows-startup-manager.htm
It disables any startup programs and fully controls startup by selecting the programs to be launched, while customizing the startup settings (ie how often and when programs should be launched, etc).

I run a little program called winpatrol, it lets you easily manage these and more.
There is a free version and a more advanced version.
Both are at

And it does make a difference, as does disk cleanup and defrags.
