Im Australian but I'll answer this as though it was posed hypothetically to me.
I would have thought that there are several strong contenders in answer to this question However my number 1 would be
Franklin D Roosevelt :32nd president (1933-45)
His legacy is still being felt in the US 60years after his Presidency finished
He is responsible for the introduction of
Social Security
The Regulation of Wall St
His New Deal enabled the US to climb out of the Great Depression faster than any other Western Nation.
His leadership in WW2 was brilliant both on a national and international level. It is one of the great shames of history that he, like Australia's war time leader John Curtin never got to see their hard work and brilliant leadership culminate in the defeat of the both the Germans and the Japanese. Make no mistake about it Roosevelt would have made the tough decision and dropped the bomb just as Truman did. Truman was really only carrying on Roosevelts work.
My number 2 and 3 without going into too manydetails would be
Abraham Lincoln...Tremendous courage, wisdom and phenomonal people skills and leadership ability
Theodore Roosevelt: great leader but one who still had the common touch

This is so easy: Ronald Reagan.
When Reagan was President, other countries admired and respected us. The very minute Reagan became President, Iran released our hostages. Some say it was a sign of good faith for the incoming President; others say it was because the Iranians knew that Reagan wouldn't take any cr@p from them, and an aircraft carrier would soon be paying them a visit.
There was a cartoon about Reagan that was so on-target. The economy was in shambles before he took office, but Reagan inspired such confidence, that investors started a bull market. The cartoon shows Reagan as Peter Pan, asking investors to, literally, fly out the window with him .... and they did. He could make people believe in the future.

Harry S. Truman! The only President to ever use an atomic weapon in a war. Then, Gerald R. Ford, the ONLY true moderate of this century, a man of compassion and balance and integrity. May God bless them both!

Ford. We need someone like him to be the next president. Someone to help heal the nation and the huge rift between the political parties.
