One of my fave artists is daniel johnston.his lyrics were painfully honest about his struggle with manic depression.he really expressed how he felt and gave you an insight to his world and way of thinking.anyone know any artists or have fave songs which have similar traits

MIssed Me by the Dresden Dolls. Chronicles her being abused by an older male. Watching her perform it live is pretty heart wrenching. Similarly, Sullen Girl by Fiona Apple.

"What if You're Living Life Upside Down" by the Truth (no longer together-Christian band).
Not a song of mania per se but definitely one questioning supposed reasoning and logic.

i second the "sullen girl" fiona apple suggestion. also "me and a gun" by tori amos is probably one of the most poignant songs ever recorded. there is a rare track by jason mraz called "0% interest" that is absolutely beautiful. "sandalwood" by lisa loeb & the nine stories as well. all of these songs possess the same qualities as what you have described as the attractive qualities of the daniel johnston songs.
