Yes, I can in a style that has ties to a degree of anime style, but I am also capable of doing many other things.

No, my college art teacher didn't give me hassle for drawing in an anime style because I was capable of displaying that I have the artistic skill and understanding of other types of artwork as well, such as drawing a realistic oil painted boot from a still life. I also had an expertise of color theory that kicked my teacher's behind.

Anime is a good entry to getting into doing more artwork; however, you shouldn't let yourself get pigeonholed into just drawing in that style.

Draw what interests you, expand your horizons, and evolve what you started with into your own style. Figure out why an art style entices you and why you find it attractive. Anime has a peculiar aesthetic appeal--but what is that appeal?

New art styles are often mocked by their elders, it happened throughout history. The Impressionist movement which featured names like Claude Monet and the Pop Art movement that featured names like Andy Warhol participated in were both criticizes as rubbish in their time but are now viewed as brilliance.

Study some art history and retort your critics with skill and knowledge, and don't forget to practice practice practice.

Good luck and keep drawing.

PS: The art teachers that will criticize your style being different from what they think is art are probably not good art teachers and want to force everyone into their style. There's plenty of artists out there who haven't gone to art school and been conditioned to drone out the same rubbish as their mentors.

My mentors and I have very different art styles, but we understand the same mechanics.

Wow...that's...not that impressive.
Anime is fun to watch, but the art style SHOULD DIE in America. Seriously.
I'm an illustration major in college and I cannot stand people who draw anime and think it's good. Everyone does it, and it's incredibly easy (I drew anime in middle school and it was the most repetitive style ever. Got very boring very quick)
Do yourself a favor and create your own style. You will get so much more respect and recognition for it.
