Why is it that you can buy everything you need to build a home at lowes or home depot except a new furnace?
This puzzles me...

Part of the reason is that each heating cooling system has to be properly sized to the building it will be gong into. This is done using a heat loss calculation which takes into account insulation levels of various surfaces, area of wall coverage in relationship to area of window surface, etc.(gross wall vs Net wall). That is to get the right size, then, with a forced air furnace, calculating length of supply duct runs to size air movers, determining if unit load will also handle AC.....
Basically the range of sizes and configurations would be onerous and the steady stream of returns and screams of I'll sue from the Do it yourselfer who miscalculated might seem counterproductive at least in the eyes of Home Depot.

( By the by, Most systems, Forced air or Hydronic even installed by the pros are typically oversized)

Try this place, www.usamfg.net They have Carrier, Bryant and all kinds of other furnaces. so you dont need or even want Lowes of Depot. See for yourself.

To deal in furnaces you need to be a distributor, Lowes is not and neither is Depot. However, also, there are plenty of distributors who will sell you a furnace right in your own town.

it really ahs to do with the product. if everyone that dont know squat bought and installed a furnace and it didnt work right, there would be complaints out the ace. if everyone complained about the furnace nobody would buy them.. there is more to buying a furnace that just the box. Replacing a furnace is different. most new items that come to the market want experienced people to install or apply them the proper way

I've built more home than most all people see the inside of in a lifetime.... there are very few things a builder buys from home depot, I've bought specific kitchen knobs, a plumbing trim when i used the plumbers crew & not the plumber & cabinets . i would never buy a/c equiptment from such a place.

if you look in to it you will also notice you can make or fix anything with a book except a furness. they are extreamly complicated. my bf had to close his dads buisness when his dad passed becouse he didnt know enough on his own to keep it up. he had been doing it for 5 years apprentice style. there also some very expensive permits you have to have to work on them.
