Brooks Robinson is the best defensively, Mike Schmidt, while not as good, put up better offensive numbers than Brooks. Ron Cey was pretty good too. Historically, Pie Traynor would be the best, but since I never saw him play, I'll have to go with Robinson.

George Brett, Mike Schmidt, and Brooks Robinson all have legitimate claims. Way back when we might talk about Pie Traynor, but that's just on reputation at this point, nobody really knows. I'm a Ron Santo fan personally, but he's probably more like a Scott Rolen than a Brett or a Schmidt, which is okay but not "the greatest."

That all depends. If your going defensive wise it's Brooks Robinson.16 gold gloves, best field % for a 3B ever.Offensive wise is Mike Schmidt with 500+ HR.A-rod is up there but he hasn't really been a 3B to long so it can't be him.George Brett was probably the best combination of all of them. With some speed, power and good field he could everything,so I'd say him.

Brooks Robinson...hands down. There's no one even close.

Mike Schmidt had a great bat (so did Brooks), but the telling stat at 3rd base is the number of Gold Gloves. They don't call it the "hot corner" for nothing. No one will EVER top the 16 3rd Base gold gloves that Brooks has.

My runner-up for best 3B of all time...and he gets no love...Ron Santo.

The greatest defensive third baseball I ever saw was Clete Boyer of the New York Yankees. There was no one better!! He may not be in the hall of fame and certainly was not as good a hitter as his brother Ken Boyer of the St. Louis Cardinals but for pure defense Clete Boyer had no peers!! History will tell you that Mike Schmidt and Brooks Robinson were the two best ever and from a statistic point of view (offense and defense) they would have to be considered just that, but anyone who really knows the game of baseball will tell you all you want to know about Clete Boyer.

Defensively, of the players I have watched, Brooks Robinson. All-around, probably Mike Schmidt.
