It is for a practical reason. People were dying from injuries playing football at the turn of the last century. President Theodore Roosevelt threatened to outlaw the sport. In response there were several changes, including padding and helmets.

Consider this too. The average length of an NFL career is around 4-5 season. Every year many college and professional players suffer injuries that either end their career or vastly diminish their ability to play at a high level. Also, many ex-football players continue to have major health concerns directly related to the beating they took playing the game.

Finally consider this: you are running at full speed and a player, weighing 250 lbs to 330 lbs, also going full speed, collides with you, and slams you to the ground (and lands on top of you). Wouldn't you want to have some protection??

No, maybe its because we have a little common sense and we don't want to pay for surgury or to get our teeth replaced.
