I don't know, maybe because they were being held illegally and in a way so as the President could blatantly violate the Geneva Convention when there was/is no proof that many (if not all) of them did anything wrong aside from have the wrong friends, be in the wrong place at the wrong time or choose to worship Allah?

Because a number of them were innocent Britons. Of course, it's hard to tell if you've been torturing an innocent man for four years if he's not allowed a free trial. Also because of pressure from the British government, which knew that they were innocent.
