Your work can only be recognized if you had a contract with him. The contract can be verbal. but you will have a harder time proving verbal over written. If you made the improvements for your own benefit without his express permission he could actually sue you to bring the property back to the original condition. I am sure your comments are out of anger, but you better be careful about slander. An opinion as a slum lord is one thing but advertisement of a property being unfit for living can cause damage, and he can collect. Also if it was so unfit, why did you stay there, at least until this last squabble came up?

It varies by county and city, but give them a call and find out where to go to file a Mechanic's Lien. This will essentially put a bill on the title of the property so it can't be sold or refinanced without you being paid. You could also sue the owner in small claims court (a nominal fee) and get a judgment that you could take to a collection attorney and go after him for payment. It all depends on how much work you want to put into it.
I would not go the slander route. You did work, you need to be paid. I you start spreading around stories you could cause more trouble for yourself...

Unless you got previous approval to do the work and an agreement that the landlord would pay back there is nothing. If its unfit then you need to report to the health department from there if they deem it unfit then you can take it to court and get your money but otherwise the law covers the landlords but if you don't do your renter homework your gonna get screwed.

You have to have a judgement in order to file a lien. In order to get the judgement the owner had to have contracted with you, not hte tenant. If you contracted with the tenant you have to deal with them in small claims court.
As you don't live there I doubt you can complain about the conditions, especially as you are disgruntled. However, the health department would access the structure and be the ones to worry about compliance.

Take him to small claims and get a judgment. Ask for the condition of the property, call your local health department and zoning inspectors.

Perhapse you should have used that money to find a new place to live. Owners typically do that sort of thing to get the people inside to leave.

1) Did you make an agreement with him? If you didn't, you can kiss away the thought of getting any money for it.
2) Did you get it in writing? If so, take him to court and sue him for the money.

Did you do it out of the kindness of your heart or to make your living conditions better, or did the landlord hire you to do the work. If you mow my lawn I am not obligated to pay you.
