In the NBA, "home court advantage" is a huge part of the league. Some teams will preform very well at home and then mysteriously play horribly on the road. Take the Orlando Magic for instance their home record is 20-14 while their road record is 11-23. It's as if two different teams are playing. Another would be the Toronto Raptors 23-10 at home and 13-21 on the road. Miami Heat 23-11 at home and 13-19 on the road.

Assuming that the basketball courts are exactly the same in every arena, what causes this drop-off? If you say the fans then think again. 82games.com has done research and has found that the away team has an equal field goal percentage and free-throw percentage to the home team.

Is it a part of the NBA's business to allow home teams to have some sort of..advantage over the away team? And are the referees in charge of giving the home team that advantage?

the reason it's called home court advantage, is because the home team has the luxury of feeling relaxed and familiar with a gym that they are used to playing in. in my years of playing ball, i could get down no matter where i was. however, there was never anything better than playing on the neighborhood courts. for some reason i just felt more at ease. in the NBA, to have that advantage is more mental than anything. just the phrase "home court advantage" can be a confidence boost to many teams. we all know that the refs make calls that are phantom-like sometimes. they favor the stars sometimes too. but mostly, i think the refs tend to reward the more aggressive team, when it comes to the way calls go. i will not say they have a charge to keep the home team ahead on calls. the home team, feeling more confident, usually comes out more aggressive, as they're being cheered on by fans. this is what leads the refs to reward them with more calls.

Home court advantage
is not that great for all teams

take the pistons there a great team
but there no that great at home (19-13)

well I mean there better on the road (23-10)

so home court advantage is not always a big fact

but its more the the manager of the clock than refs giving the advantage
because there allowed to start the game a couple seconds late if the home gets the ball and a few seconds early at the nd of the game if the home team is winning

Why can't it be the fans? There is more to the game then just field goal percentage. Maybe 3 point shooters feel more comfortable taking shots at home. Maybe guards are more confident in taking to the hoop. You also have to factor fatigue of travel. The traveling team has to get to the city and stay in a hotel. Where the home players can sleep in their own bed and drive their own cars. Lastly maybe because more players have their families in the crowd. All of these could be reasons. The winning percentage is only circumstantial evidence for bias officials.

If the refs do anything different then they should be fired. The crowd, not traveling, being very familiar with surroundings before and during the game also help. But players just play a little harder when someone is gonna cheer for them, so the fans are probably the biggest reason in my opinion. But im not a pro athelete so i really dont know. But its definitely not the refs

most teams perform better at home because they're playing in a more comfortable surrounding. on a court they often shoot on.

some rings in the NBA are different to one another. some rings are wound tighter then others and because of this it affects the way a ball moves when it hits the ring area. players who have more experience shooting at such a ring obviously understand how the ball moves.

playing at home also gives u crowd support. hopefully when playing at home, your supporters outnumber the opponent supporters. having players cheer for u helps a lot. playing in front of YOUR fans, hopefully boosts your adrenaline.

possibly refs alter the way they referee because of the fan support and they dont want the boos and the pressure....theyre human too remember (well some are)

home court advantage is a big reason because the crowd is with you and your not the opposing team

refs usually are more leniant for the home teams, and since there are more fans at home it gets the team more pumped up so they play better and more aggressively
