Uh, the Samuel Jackson character (e.g. the black dude) was the bad guy. He was creating the accidents as a way to find his opposite, the Bruce Willis character (e.g. the white guy who couldn't be injured). All those people suffered and died just so one twisted terrorist could prove his theory that there was someone out there (Bruce Willis) who had these incredible powers.

The Samuel L. Jackson character committed terrorist acts in an effort to find the "superhero" he believed existed somewhere for real. It wasn't revealed until the Bruce Willis character made physical contact with him and saw the despicable acts he committed. The obsession did not take into account the loss of life in his search.

Yes, I've seen it. I liked it. It is actually M. Night Shyamalan's favorite of his films.
