Bad teachers (or at least old fashioned ones) make it not fun. The new breed of teacher, those who make music interesting, tying it in with other arts, current (popular) arts, and with a new love and energy, make it fun.
Music is like most arts. It is an alternate for brawn (sports). Unfortunately, we are neglecting the arts more and more just because they are 'fun' whereas sports are seen (wrongly) as a career.

Its all what you make of it
Boot camp in the marines is hard too,but that doesnt stop people from joining.
You have to like challenges,challenges should be somewhat fun,frustrating at times,but fun nonetheless
You have to love playing

I've always thought the hard pieces are the MOST fun! What a challenge to take on something that looks daunting at first only to jump in and learn it and perform it.
