Okay guys. It is possible to not have dreams. I had a period of years in which I quit having dreams. Mental disorder - nope. Sleep disorder - yep. I went to a sleep clinic where they wired my head and sought to scientifically study my sleep patterns. Due to sleep apopnea, which is a lesser form of sleep apnea, my breathing gets interrupted. There are 4 stages of sleep. I would only make it to stage one and two and NEVER made it to 3 or 4. With a machine that helps me breath at night, I have dreams. If I don't use the machine I feel less rested because I don't make it to the REM sleep and therefore have no dreams. So, it could be a sleep disorder if someone really has no dreams.

In the R.E.M state, as leesespi said, everyone dreams. Many people say they NEVER dream, only because they don't remember dreaming. I consider that unfortunate, because dreams are a very important dimension to our lives in ways on which I shan't go on a diatribe. I also seem to recall the question hotrodde mentioned, about blind people dreaming. If they were born blind, they'd have no concept of the "visual," but all other senses would be in the dreams, & perhaps even more heightened. Exploring your dreams is fascinating & insightful. NO ONE can interpret your dream for you! Books & Websites generalizing symbols, metaphors & so on are totally useless. Yes! Everyone dreams. (Sleep deprivation can effect whether or not you dream, & has two negative consequences--lack of sleep in general, & the NEED to dream.)

The people I have heard which don't have dreams are depressed or having mental problems.
Remembering a dream is harder, I will have a dream and unless it is very memorable I will not be able to recall it. Dreams help keep us emotionally healthy, otherwise we will have a lot of pent up emotions in us and it can be unhealthy both emotional and physical.
So studies have shown.

Scientific evidence has shown that even people who do have dreams only remember ten percent of them at MOST. When you go into an R.E.MM. (rapid eye movement) sleep state, it is all subconcious collection of thought. Most dreams occur at this time, but 90% of these are down the memory drain. The truth is, there may be people who don't remember their dreams, but in R.E.M. state it's impossible not to have them. Research doesn't lie.

It feels like I don't dream as I very rarely remember them. I think it's because I sleep pretty deeply and only ever have that light sleep where you can dream intensly, at the weekend when I have a lie-in. I daydream far more than I do when I'm asleep!

Everyone has dreams. Allot of people don't remember them. Very few remember their dreams every single night. It's as normal to remember every dream as it is to forget every dream. But everyone dreams. Human nature the brain doesn't sleep. unless in a coma.x

It isn't that they don't have them, its just that they don't remember them. Most people have about 70 dreams a night. And if you watch the ones who say they never dream while they are sleeping, they still move around and somtimes mumble or talk just like they are dreaming.

I've heard through reliable sources that all people dream, it's our bodies' way of releasing pent-up tensions and fears and working out our problems. But I know that not all people remember their dreams, I usually do but I don't remember last night's.

i think people have things going on in their heads all the time, but sometimes the things in our minds didn't leave a deep enough impression to classify as a dream. There are nights i've thought through my sleep and seen visions or what have you but didn't dream.
